Greg Were’s Solo Circumnavigation: A Journey of Resilience and Determination
Date: April 22nd 2025
Greg Were has arrived in Sandy Bay Marieville Esplanade Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. Greg, is currently undertaking a solo circumnavigation of the globe. His journey has been marked by a series of highs and lows, both literally and figuratively, as he navigates the vast and unpredictable oceans.
Greg embarked on his solo, unassisted circumnavigation of the globe in July 2024, aiming to set a record as the first person to achieve this feat on a yacht of this size.
Despite his initial plan to complete the journey without stopping, Greg made a brief stop in South Africa in November 2024 to carry out essential repairs on Hummingbird. Now, after several months of challenging sailing, he has anchored in Hobart for further repairs before continuing his remarkable journey. He will be continuing onto Cape Horn, the Everest of the sea.
Reflecting on his voyage, Greg shared, “It has been a tough few months. My batteries are running low and it has been some hectic sailing with a lot of storms. I am happy to anchor now and get some repairs done to Hummingbird.”
Greg’s arrival in Hobart marks a significant milestone in his quest to circumnavigate the globe. The sailing community and supporters eagerly await his next steps as he prepares to resume his journey.
Greg’s solo circumnavigation is not just a test of endurance but also a demonstration of the human spirit’s capacity to overcome adversity. His journey continues to inspire many, proving that with determination and resilience, one can navigate through the toughest of challenges.

The co-production between Scenery (“Human Playground”) and Hess Entertainment will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tomas Kaan.
