South African Sailor Greg Were Aims to Break Records with Solo Circumnavigation
Falmouth, July 22nd, 2024 – Greg Were, a 33-year-old adventurer and sailor from South Africa, is embarking on Tuesday July 23rd. a daring voyage that could make history. Were plans to sail the smallest boat around the world, completing an unassisted, non-stop circumnavigation aboard his 20-foot (6.1-meter) yacht, named “Hummingbird.”
Reflecting on the challenge, Were acknowledges the risks: “For most sailors, the fear of going overboard is ever-present—a dread that accompanies the thrill of open waters. But it’s a risk I accept willingly.” He has prepared by mentally rehearsing various scenarios, ensuring he’s ready for any obstacle that may arise.
What sets Were apart is his determination to achieve what no one has done before—
circumnavigating the globe on such a small vessel. “The fact that nobody has achieved this on a 20-foot yacht gives me an extra push,” he asserts. “Hummingbird and I will undoubtedly face challenges, but I believe we can conquer them.”
In addition to his daring voyage, a documentary film is in the works to capture Were’s incredible journey. The co-production between Scenery (“Human Playground”) and Hess Entertainment will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tomas Kaan. The documentary promises to showcase the highs and lows of Were’s solo expedition, as he films himself throughout the entire adventure.
Greg will be departing from Falmouth on Tuesday 23rd July at 7am.
