Adventurer Greg Were Embarks on Historic Solo Sailing Journey Around the World in a 20-Foot Boat
Falmouth, July 15, 2024 — Greg, a 33-year-old sailor with an insatiable thirst for adventure, is about to make history. In the next couple of days, he will set sail from Falmouth, embarking on a voyage around the world in his 20-foot boat, Hummingbird. What makes this feat truly remarkable? Greg aims to accomplish this circumnavigation single-handedly, non-stop, and unassisted.
Greg’s journey began when he acquired Hummingbird at the end of 2021. After he worked on repairing Hummingbird and rigging adjustments, he sailed her from South Africa to the Netherlands, stopping at various points along the way. A significant part of this initial journey was undertaken solo, a testament to Greg’s determination and skill.
Now, Greg’s sights are set on an even greater challenge: circumnavigating the globe in Hummingbird. His route takes him from Falmouth around the three Great Capes – down to the tip of Africa, across the vast expanse of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, around South America, and back up to Falmouth. The entire voyage is expected to take up to one year, with Greg planning to return in July 2025.
“I’m not just chasing the thrill of open waters,” Greg explains. “The fact that nobody has achieved this on such a small vessel gives me an extra push. Hummingbird and I will undoubtedly face obstacles, but I believe we can conquer them.”
About Greg: Greg, a seasoned sailor from South Africa and adventurer at heart, has spent months preparing for this historic voyage. His passion for the sea and his unwavering commitment to exploration drive him forward.
